Laksmi is the Hindu Goddess of Wealth, Love, Beauty, Happiness and Abundance.  Laksmi means Good Luck.  Her name is derived from the Sanskrit word “Laksya”, meaning ‘aim’ or ‘goal’, and She is the of wealth and prosperity, both material and spiritual.  She has many other names including: The Lotus Goddess, Daughter of the Ocean of Milk (Ksirabdhitanaya), Ocean Born (Jaladhija), Lotus (Padma), Lotus Bearer (Padmavati) and Jaganmata (the Mother of the Universe).  Laksmi is the Goddess the household and women.  She is worshiped daily.  Her main festival is Diwali, the Festival of Lights, small diyas (earthen oil lamps) are placed all around the periphery of the house, to welcome Her into the homes

Laksmi is depicted as a beautiful young woman with four hands, sitting or standing on a full-bloomed lotus and holding a lotus bud, which stands for beauty, purity, and fertility.  Her four hands represent the four ends of human life: dharma or righteousness, kama or desires, artha or wealth, and moksha or liberation from the cycle of birth and death.  She always wears gold embroidered red clothes.  Red symbolizes activity and the golden lining indicates prosperity.

There are many legends and myths about Laksmi.  One of the most told is Laksmi existed from all time, floating before creation on a lotus; for this She is called Padma (‘lotus-Goddess’), whose symbol became the sign for spiritual enlightenment.  But the most well-known is Laksmi was birthed from the churning ocean, riding a Lotus Blossom, bearing gifts and blessings, and bringing renewal to the world.  Shinning like a million stars, as Laksmi rode in upon Her Lotus Blossom, She delighted and dazzled all the Gods with Her radiant beauty.

Celebrating Laksmi in the Daughters of the Goddess is annual event.  We do a money pouring ritual that was passed down to us by our Elder Luisah Teish.  The Full Moon in Taurus it is a perfect time to celebrate Laksmi and to give gratitude for what we have received.  She helps manifest what we want.  Come and give thanks for Her abundance, as well as call in the abundance in your life that you are seeking.

For the Ritual Please wear Gold or Green.  For the altar bring Pictures and Symbols of Laksmi.   Some of Laksmi’s symbols include elephants, water, gold coins and rice. Holly and basil are sacred to Laksmi. Please bring a Gold, white or green candle, your checkbooks and wallets to put on the alter for blessing, business plans any other finical items that you want action on or blessed.

Remember a wide mouth jar with a tight-fitting lid and loose change, any oils or ingredients you want added to the money water.   In the spirit of giving thanks to the temple please bring a tithe of 5 bills (of any denomination) wrapped in gold cord or ribbon.

If you still have remaining Money Water from a previous ritual, please use the water to bless your front steps, computer, money altar, desk at work, anyplace that you would like to bless with abundance, and the Earth.   Give the remaining money in the jar a good rinse, giving Her thanks and praise for the magick She has brought you. Bring the left-over money to the ritual or spend it on something special for your magickal practice.

Hail Laksmi!
