2019 Oshun

The energy of the Spiral Dance is still moving, going to the center and returning out, in and out.  Spinning, swirling, in sync with the energies, with the ancestors. Just as the energies of the night flowed so smoothly, we now flow into the rivers of Oshun.  Come and join us!

Oshun is one of the Seven African Powers and is the Goddess of love, art, and sensuality.  She is said to have a lot of magic up Her sleeves and is often seen as a seducer. Oshun is of the rivers, streams, lakes and waterfalls. She loves to adorn Herself in honey, gold and yellow silk, carrying a pumpkin purse, all while fanning Herself or appreciating Her reflection in a mirror.

Her generosity pours out of Her like honey and She is said to feed the hungry.  She also loves to and to be entertained. Oshun heals with cool water and helps womyn who are barren, have troubled wombs, any other pregnancy issues, as well as with their sexuality.

In “Jambalaya” Chief Teish describes Her like this:

“Oshun is the Sacred Harlot.   She is the African Venus-Aphrodite!  Beauty, love, and sensuality are Her creations.  She is the Golden Lady, all jewelry belongs to Her. She is sweetness and light, all things that make your life worth living . . .

. . . She grinds spices with a mortar and pestle, sweet little girl. . . you think.  Beware, the Mother of Witches is stirring up a brew! . . . The peacock, parrot and the vulture are Her birds.”

Can you close your eyes and feel yourself floating in Her gentle river.  Oshun is the river, She is the flow. She is opulence and abundance. Come and join us as the waters flow around the circle in our Money pouring ritual.  Make sure to bring along a wide mouthed vessel/jar so that you may gather some of the waters of abundance to bless you thru the year.

For the altar: If you have any, and are called too, bring any images of Her.  Very important:  bring a wide mouthed jar that seals well.  Also Her colors are yellow & gold so please bring a candle of those colors.  Associations with Oshun are: Rivers, quail, vulture, parrot, peacock, gold, bells, fans, mirrors, scallop shell, French pastry, honey, cinnamon, oranges, and pumpkins.  As you can tell She is very abundant.

Please see our participation page for more information on attending our ceremonies.
