I so love this time of year and all the wonderful abundance of the Earth. We are so lucky to live in California, especially during Summer and Fall. Just as the seasons continue to move forward, so we too travel from the realms of the Romans and our Mother Guardian Juno into the sands of the hot Sun of Egypt to celebrate Summer Solstice and Sekhmet.

Summer Solstice is the longest day and the shortest night of the year. The noon Sun is at the farthest northern point before She begins Her journey to the south. This is the point that the year begins to wane. It is, and has been, one of the most important solar events through the history of humankind. The journey into harvest has begun, and for us here in California, the crops are abundant. We can find figs, cherries, artichokes, arugula & asparagus, beans of all sorts, peppers, broccoli, cabbage & lettuces & leafy things, garlic, corn, cucumbers, onions, peas, potatoes, apricots, avocados, cantaloupes, honeydew, lemons galore, nectarines, peaches, plums, watermelons, and all sorts of berries. We are truly blessed.
Sekhmet is the Egyptian lioness-headed Sun Goddess. She is seen as the Avenger of Wrongs and so is a Goddess of war & destruction. Over 700 statues stood, or sat, in Her temple and the ancient Egyptian priests were required to perform a ritual before a different statue each morning and each afternoon, every day of the year. In this way, they would gain Her favor and avoid Her wrath. Sekhmet personifies the aggressive aspects of the female and Ptah was Her consort. It is believed that Sekhmet’s worship pre-dates that of Ptah by at least several hundred years. She is also known as Scarlet Lady in reference to blood – so She is also known to rule over menstruation. Her name also means One Who is Powerful, One Before Whom Evil Trembles, and She Who is Powerful. She is the patron of physicians, physician-priests and healers. Her action is always the right or appropriate action. When she destroys it is always an appropriate destruction or vengeance. She removes threats and punishes those who do wrong against Ma’at.
Sekhmet is also one of our Temple Sacred Flames. Each day one of our temple sisters are lighting flames for 3 different Goddesses. We do this to connect/reconnect with the Goddesses, our Temple, and our spirit sisters. Sekhmet’s flame was lit here on January 8th, 2004 and Her flames has been burning brightly every since.
It is so appropriate, during this hot season, that we call to our Powerful Mother Sekhmet. We call to Her especially at this time when our rights, our bodies, our very essence is threatened by the powers that be. Time seems to be turning back to a place that we really don’t want to go. It is time to stand, to speak, to support, to come together as womyn. Only in this way, will things start to change, and we can truly make the difference that is possible with womyn-power. Come and join us.
For the altar please bring an orange, gold or yellow candle in a glass container. Any images of Sekhmet or fruits/vegetables of the season. If you have a special organization or group that is doing activism for womyn and girls, please bring some information with you. Please bring tithe in multiple of 5 in bills, no coins. Bring along some herbs so that we can adorn & recharge our Temple Broom. If you are a Sekhmet Flame tender, please bring your candle.
